Shark DetectPro Lift-Away ADV Review: Smart Sensors, Real Cleaning Power

Upright vacuums are getting smarter, and the Shark DetectPro Lift-Away ADV might be the most adaptive cleaning machine on the market right now. It’s built around a network of four automated sensors designed to take the guesswork out of vacuuming — no more cranking suction manually when you hit a dirty patch. We ran it against our two daily workhorses — a Dyson Animal DC41 from 2012 that’s still going strong, and a Shark Navigator that’s at least four years old — to see if the $399 price tag buys real cleaning or just marketing.

TL;DR — The 10-second verdict

What it isA 14.51 lb bagless upright with Lift-Away pod and four-sensor “DuoClean Detect” automation
Who it’s forPet owners, apartment dwellers, and mixed hard-floor/carpet homes who want a deep clean without fighting the machine
The headlineThe sensors genuinely work — and the DuoClean PowerFins brushroll is the best hair-wrap prevention we’ve used
The catch$399 MSRP, small dustbin, a stubby 2.1-ft hose, and sensors that need the occasional wipe
Our takeGenuinely impressive engineering. Worth it at the $314 Walmart price, less compelling at full MSRP

Design & Build Quality

The DetectPro is built around Shark’s classic Lift-Away trick: one click detaches the pod, turning the upright into a lightweight handheld canister for ceilings, stairs, and furniture. It’s not new, but it’s still the most practical above-floor solution in the category.

At 14.51 lbs it’s dense and well-balanced — it feels far sturdier than the flimsy all-plastic budget uprights. The 12-inch cleaning head uses the DuoClean PowerFins brushroll, which is designed to actively prevent hair wrap. Spoiler: it works. This is the single best hair-wrap-prevention system we’ve tested — good enough that we’d buy the vacuum at MSRP for this one feature alone.

One design gripe: the stretch hose is only 2.1 feet. Try to stretch it while the vacuum is upright and the whole unit tips over. You’ll want the Lift-Away pod detached for anything above floor level.

The Smart Sensing: Does “DuoClean Detect” Actually Work?

The star of the show is the four-sensor network, and — refreshingly — it’s not a gimmick:

  • Dirt Detect — boosts suction the moment it senses hidden debris. You can watch the nozzle LEDs change color as the floor gets dirtier.
  • Edge Detect — within 2 inches of a wall, suction doubles along the edge. Edges are where most uprights cheat; this one doesn’t.
  • Floor Detect — an ultrasonic sensor reads the surface (hardwood vs carpet vs rug) and adjusts brushroll speed automatically.
  • Direction Detect — optimizes the brushroll for full pickup on both forward and reverse strokes.

The result is a vacuum that manages its own power in real time. You push less, and the dirty spots get the extra suction exactly when they need it.

Real-World Performance

In our testing this thing is an absolute beast. It picked up buried dust from carpet that a daily-running robot vacuum had left behind — the kind of deep debris you didn’t know was there. Raw suction at the hose beat the Bissell SurfaceSense Allergen Pet, and hard-floor debris pickup easily outcleaned the Dyson Ball Animal 3.

The front-facing LED deserves a shout-out too — it lights up dark corners and shows exactly where the dust is hiding. It makes cleaning feel almost effortless.

Real-World Quirks & Community Concerns

No product is perfect, and the forums call out three recurring issues:

  • Small dustbin — the slim design means a small bin. With multiple shedding pets you’ll be emptying it often.
  • Sensor maintenance — this unit is packed with optical and ultrasonic sensors, and fine dust coats them over time. If the vacuum gets stuck in high-suction mode, a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth fixes it.
  • Hose reach — at 2.1 feet, the hose forces you into Lift-Away mode for stairs and high spots.
  • Ongoing costs — the Odor Neutralizer cartridges lose their scent and need replacing, and the 25-ft cord means switching outlets in larger homes.

Community consensus sits around 4.5/5 stars from 640+ ratings — powerful performance, real sensor value, with the bin and hose as the recurring compromises.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Sensor tech actually works and saves effort
  • Raw suction is incredibly strong, especially on edges
  • Lift-Away pod makes above-floor cleaning a breeze
  • PowerFins brushroll eliminates hair wrap
  • HEPA + complete seal at this price is a must-have, and it delivers

Cons:

  • $399 MSRP is steep — buy at the Walmart price instead
  • Small dustbin needs frequent emptying
  • 2.1-ft hose restricts reach and can tip the unit
  • Sensors need periodic wiping

The Bottom Line

The Shark DetectPro Lift-Away ADV is a highly competitive, sensor-packed upright that brings genuinely useful automation to home cleaning. The sensors aren’t a gimmick — they save effort and improve edge and deep-cleaning results. For pet owners and mixed-floor households it’s a genuinely great tool.

At $399.99 MSRP it’s a tough sell against discount rivals. At the $314.99 Walmart price — or the remarkable $188.95 restored — it’s an easy recommendation. Smart tech on a vacuum? In this case, it earns its keep.
